Poo-nami proof hack!
In this episode of Rosie’s Rituals we’re talking all about the endless poo-namis and the stains that come with them and my simple, cheap hack to get those tough stains out! Let’s get into it…
Why the leaks?
When my daughter was first born, there were lots of leaks. Likely due to us being brand new parents and not putting on the nappies correctly to be completely honest. But also trial and error with different nappies and learning how to change them properly!
One thing I didn’t realise was that the fastening straps on nappies should meet in the middle and not to the sides. Frequent leaks are also an indicator that your little one is ready to size up, so I’d recommend checking in on those two points if you’re seeing a lot of leaks (prevention is better than cure!). After realising this, I personally think it’s better to size up if unsure to keep your baby most comfortable and leak free.
I had so many white cotton new born vests, due to unexpected gifts and I’ll be honest, I was just chucking away the badly stained vests as I had such an overflow! However, now 5 months on, I don’t have that luxury and I don’t want to be so wasteful and went in search of a stain busting hack!
Whilst we’re talking dirty vests I wanted to mention that you don’t need to remove vests over the babies head, especially when dirty! You just need to utilise the envelope shoulder folds. Just unfasten the crotch poppers, fold down the shoulder folds to reveal their arms and roll down the vest. This was a total game changer for me! No more fear of poo going over their head!
Nappy brands I’ve tried
Before I start talking about the stain removing hack I wanted to take a minute to let you know the nappies I have tried and tested. I started on the Mamia nappies from Aldi that come highly recommended by close friends and family, however, they caused irritation to my daughter’s skin, so I switched those out pretty quickly. I then tried Tescos nappies and had the same issue. So, after some research we ended up going with Pampers Premium nappies, as they are the kindest on skin and they’ve been perfect. The Pampers are also pretty good for stopping leaks but some are just unavoidable.
I tend to get my pampers on Amazon in bulk to save on the pennies and it’s just so convenient with next day delivery to my door.
I use Huggies pure water wipes and found them to be gentle on the skin and great for all nappy changes. Weirdly the pampers water wipes irritated my babies skin.
The stain Fairy
After trying and testing many different methods such as; soaking in Milton Tablets and/or boiling water, bleaching and a hot wash in the washing machine, I found that the stains still persisted!
Now the good bit… how do I get those big stains out?! Well here’s my super simple five step routine to get those stains totally out!
- Rinse off as much of the mess with hot water and from behind the stain.
- Squirt on a fair amount of Fairy washing up liquid and rub the material together and lather.
- Squirt a little more Fairy washing up liquid on the stained area and place in a bowl.
- Fill the bowl with hot water and leave to soak over night or until the next load of baby washing!
- Lastly, simply ring out the clothing and include in a load of baby washing.

Tah-dah the stains have gone! I love this method as I don’t need to buy any new chemicals and the product isn’t harsh. This may work with other brands of washing up liquid but I haven’t tried it, let me know how you get on if you do!
I also wanted to mention that my baby is currently exclusively breastfed and I’m not sure if stains from babies on formula or solids could have a different outcome but again, please let me know and I can update this post!
Moral or the story
Always double check that the nappy is the correct size and fastened properly, prevention is ALWAYS better than cure. Rinse the dirty clothes in hot water and soak with washing up liquid over night and you’ll never see a poo stain on their lovely little clothes again!
